Grandma Flores

Everytime we go to Grandma Flores' home we always know we will be greeted with the smell of hot homemade tortillas; ready to butter up and shove in our mouth. That is one of the things I look forward to the most. And it never fails, the moment always brings me back to my childhood. I can vividly remember my grandma making tortillas; preparing the dough, seperating them each into their circles and most of all, I remember her yelling at me as she caught me pinching dough off of them to eat. Yes, I did it to just about every one of them until my stomach felt queezy. She would always say, "Vas a ver, Blancita. You never learn!" And I would just smile while she smirked one back at me.

Well, as I have said in previous blogs, I have started making my own tortillas. They come out pretty good, but they are nowhere close to Gma Flores'. I don't know why; it's the same recipe, exactly! I guess I just don't have the "touch" yet. So I once again sat with Gma this vacation to study her technique, hoping something would rub off. Lil' Chris pulls out his playdough and pretend rolling pin and makes tortillas with me at the house so he was all too excited when Gma Flores allowed him to work side by side with her and help make them. He sat there the WHOLE time, til the last one was made and off the comal.

He was so proud of himself and kept showing her what he had done.

The next day MiaLuz was the one sitting there with amazement,

...and I don't even have to say how much she LOVES to sample the finished product!

And this is the picture you will see everyday as you walk into Gma Flores' home. Always in the kitchen, whipping up homemade tortillas for anyone and everyone that may stop by throughout the day. And always has a hot meal ready to go in case you are hungry. We love you Grandma and miss you and your cooking!
